Stripe Identity Verification Failed: Owners, Banks, and What to Send

When Stripe cannot verify an owner or a bank account: which mismatch matters, what to send, and why a new company is not a fresh identity.

Identity failures feel insulting and are usually mechanical. The account says one legal person. The document shows another spelling, a middle name, an old address, or a company that was registered last week to hold the payout. Stripe’s job is to know who can be pursued if the charges are reversed. A failed check means that chain is broken.

The chain that has to be the same chain

  1. The legal name on the Stripe account.
  2. The people who own and control that legal entity, in the percentages and roles that are true.
  3. The government document for those people, in date, and readable.
  4. The bank account name that receives payouts.
  5. The website and the product the cardholder is actually buying.

Break any link and the check fails, even when the business is ordinary. Fix the link that broke. Do not replace the whole chain with a cleaner one you do not trade through.

What to send

  • The document Stripe named, not a substitute you prefer. If they asked for a passport, a utility bill is not a creative alternative.
  • All corners visible, no glare, the expiry date in frame.
  • A company extract that shows the same number you typed into the account.
  • A bank document that shows the account name, not only the last four digits on a card.
  • A one-line note if a legal name includes a character the form could not store. Do not also change your product description in that note.

What not to send

Do not send someone else’s identity “to hold the account”. Do not send a forged or edited document. Do not open a second account in a relative’s name to escape the failed check. Those are not verification problems anymore. They are the reason accounts are closed and the reason a later processor, or a partnership reviewer, will stop the conversation.

Say the failure plainly in any assessment

“Identity check failed on 2 November because the bank is in a personal name” is useful. “We’re verified, don’t worry” is not. RevRouters does not verify identity itself in this service, and it will not pretend a failed check was a success.

What this briefing is not

It is not legal, tax or card-scheme advice, and it is not Stripe’s policy. Your notice and Stripe’s terms control the account. RevRouters does not process payments, does not lift a freeze, and does not offer another business’s account as a remedy.

Questions on this note

Why does Stripe reject a document that looks fine to me?

The name, the date of birth, the address, or the company number does not match what the account already holds, or the image is cropped, expired, or unreadable. Stripe is matching records. It is not grading the photograph.

Can I verify a different person to get through faster?

Only if that person is actually an owner or director the account should name. Substituting someone with cleaner paperwork is not a fix. It is a false account.

My bank account is in a personal name. Is that the problem?

It can be. Payouts are expected to land with the business Stripe underwrote, or with a person they have verified as entitled to them. A friend, a sibling, or a brand-new company bank is not a cosmetic change.

If verification fails, is the whole account frozen?

Not always. Identity and bank checks can limit payouts while charges continue, or the reverse. Read the capability state. Do not borrow the word freeze from a different incident.
