Money that “has not arrived” has three common causes, and only one of them is a freeze. The payout never left Stripe because payouts are paused or the funds are still pending or reserved. The payout left and the bank sent it back. Or it landed in a bank account nobody is watching, because the details were changed months ago. Each cause has a screen. Start there.
A failed payout
Stripe’s payout record will show a failure, often with a bank reason. Names that do not match the legal entity are a classic. So are account numbers transcribed from a screenshot, accounts that are not able to receive the payment type Stripe sends in that country, and accounts the bank has frozen for its own reasons. Fixing a transcription error is legitimate. Replacing the entity’s bank with a friend’s, because the friend’s bank “works”, is a change of payee.
After a failure, Stripe may retry or may wait for new details. While the failure is unresolved, do not treat the gross charge volume as cash received. It is not in the operating account. Invoices you pay from it will bounce for an ordinary banking reason, which is embarrassing but clearer than a risk hold. Say the plainer thing to anyone you owe.
Identity and ownership reviews
Stripe has to know who controls the account. That means the people, not the brand. Expect requests for a government identity document, proof of address, company documents, and a statement of who owns more than the relevant threshold. The thresholds and document types depend on country. The principle does not: the person who can empty the account should be a person Stripe has accepted.
- Send documents that are in date, complete, and for the named person. Cropped corners and glare are delays, not cleverness.
- If ownership changed, update the truth. Leaving a departed co-founder on the account because their check already passed is a false file.
- If a reviewer says the face, the name or the date of birth does not match, do not send a different document until the first mismatch is explained. Two conflicting passports do not average out to a verified person.
What not to change while a review is open
Every material change is a new question. A new bank account, a new director, a new website domain, a new product, a new country of customers. Some of those changes are mandatory — a director really did resign — and should be disclosed because they are true. None of them should be made because a forum said a fresh bank account resets a review. It does not. It adds days and suspicion.
Passwords stay with the people who are allowed to have them. A bookkeeper can be given a role if Stripe’s dashboard allows a role that does not include the power to change the bank account. Sharing the owner login so someone can “just update the bank” is how payout destinations get changed without a second pair of eyes, and how accounts are emptied. RevRouters will not ask for that login. Anyone who does is outside this service.
Match the name to the entity
What this briefing is not
Questions on this note
The payout failed. Is my account frozen?
Not necessarily. Open the payout. If the bank rejected it, the reason is often the account name, number, or a closed account. If Stripe paused payouts, the payout screen and the account banner will say the pause is on Stripe’s side. Those are different repairs.
Can I switch the payout bank to a partner while I sort this out?
Not as a workaround. The bank account is who receives settlement. Changing it to another business changes the structure of the account. During a review it also adds a new fact for Stripe to check. Do not do it to keep cash moving.
Why are they asking for a passport again?
Identity and beneficial-ownership checks are repeated when documents expire, when ownership changes, when a payout bank does not match, or when a review cannot tie the account to a person. Send the current document for the actual person. Do not substitute a clearer scan of someone else.
