Who the Dispute Lands on in a Marketplace

The cardholder disputes a merchant. In a marketplace that merchant might be the platform or the seller. The contract does not change the charge.

On this page

When a cardholder does not recognise a marketplace purchase, the dispute is filed against the merchant on the charge. Sellers assume the platform will handle it. Platforms assume the seller will upload proof. The charge has already chosen. If nobody opens that charge, the deadline passes and the balance pays.

A marketplace is not a place where disputes become nobody’s.
Find the charge. The dispute is already aimed.

What is actually moving

Evidence still has to be true. The platform often has the cardholder email. The seller often has the shipment. A response that lacks either one loses. Blaming the other party inside the response does not help the issuer.

  • The charge names the merchant.
  • The seller may hold the proof.
  • The platform may hold the customer.
  • The balance that loses is the one on the charge.

What people confuse it with

If the platform is restricted, sellers sometimes raise disputes on their own accounts for the platform’s orders. That creates a second merchant for a purchase that already has one.

Not a reinstatement method

Nothing in this note switches a Stripe control off, quotes a secret threshold, or suggests another login as a remedy.

What to do with it

Assign the dispute to the account that actually has it.

  1. Open the charge and read the account id.
  2. Put the seller’s fulfilment and the platform’s receipt in one response.
  3. Name in the contract who funds a loss. Do not invent it after the loss.
  4. Do not re-file the same order on a different account.

What this briefing is not

It is not legal, tax or card-scheme advice, and it is not Stripe’s policy. Your notice and Stripe’s terms control the account. RevRouters does not process payments, does not lift a freeze, and does not offer another business’s account as a remedy.

Questions on this note

Can the platform and the seller both respond?

The response belongs to the account that holds the dispute. The other party can supply evidence. Two conflicting stories are worse than one incomplete one.

If we did not build Connect properly, can we fix it during the dispute?

You can correct the future. You cannot rewrite the charge that already happened.
