Marketplaces collapse two Stripe relationships into one sentence. “Stripe froze us” might mean the platform cannot process, or a single seller cannot be paid, or payouts to every connected account are delayed because the platform’s risk changed. The money, the customer’s statement, and the person who must answer a dispute sit in different places depending on which one it is.
Three places a limit can sit
- The platform account. New charges through the platform may fail. Connected accounts may be unable to be paid through that platform even when their own identity is fine.
- One connected account. That seller’s payouts or charges are limited. Other sellers on the same platform keep trading. This is the case platforms mis-describe as a global outage.
- The card payment itself. Radar, 3D Secure, or the issuer declined one attempt. Neither account is frozen. The order is.
Whose name is on the charge
The cardholder’s statement and the dispute land on a merchant. In a Connect setup that merchant might be the platform, the connected account, or a combination the dashboard can explain and a blog should not guess. Before anyone promises a seller they will “cover disputes”, read who the dispute is actually filed against. A promise from the wrong party is not cover. It is a future argument.
Standard, Express, and Custom change who fills in the forms and who can see the dashboard. They do not change the need for the seller to be the seller. A platform that onboards businesses it cannot describe, into categories it cannot support, gets restricted for that. The connected accounts do not become clean because the platform’s brand was well known.
If you are the seller
- Ask which account is limited: yours, or the platform’s. Get the words, not a paraphrase.
- Check whether you can still log into your own Stripe account and what it says about payouts.
- Do not let the platform move you onto an employee’s or a sister company’s Stripe “for the week”.
- Keep your own copy of orders and fulfilment. If the platform cannot produce them later, disputes still need evidence.
- If you then approach a partnership assessment, say you were a connected account, name the platform, and include what you were told. Do not present those sales as if they were made on an account you control if they were not.
A platform restriction is not a spare account
What this briefing is not
Questions on this note
If my platform’s Stripe is restricted, is my connected account frozen too?
Not always. A platform can lose the ability to create charges while a connected account, especially a Standard account that the seller opened themselves, still has its own standing. The opposite also happens: the seller is restricted and the platform is fine. You have to look at the account that is actually limited. “The marketplace went down” is not a diagnosis.
Can the platform pay me from its own bank if Stripe paused connected payouts?
It might pay you a commercial settlement it already owes. It cannot honestly relabel that as the card payment being complete, and it cannot move the card charge onto a different merchant so the pause does not apply. Whose name is on the charge is the processor’s question, not a payout preference.
Does Express or Custom mean the platform is the merchant?
It means the platform has more control over the experience. It does not, by itself, tell a customer, a bank, or a reviewer who the seller is. The charge, the descriptor, the connected account’s identity, and the platform agreement all have to be read together.
Can RevRouters replace a restricted platform?
No. RevRouters is not a platform, not a processor, and not a Connect replacement. If a partnership is being discussed, the seller, the product, and the processor’s permission still have to be named. A restricted platform is a fact in that file, not a hole another login fills.
