If the payout reached the bank and you then refund the charge, Stripe has to fund that refund from the remaining balance, from future charges, or from the bank, under the account terms. This is the ordinary way a negative balance starts. It is not a glitch and it is not removed by closing the laptop.
You can be paid and still owe the refund.
What is actually moving
Refunding off-platform, by bank transfer, while leaving the card charge in place, feels kind and creates a dispute later. The card network still sees the original charge. The customer’s bank can still pull it back.
- Payout first, refund second: the balance falls.
- Refund on the same charge.
- An off-platform refund leaves the card charge open.
- A revenue share is not automatically a refund share.
What people confuse it with
A partner who already took a share of the payout has taken money the refund may reclaim. The share agreement has to say who funds that. If it does not, you do not have a partnership. You have a dispute about a dispute.
Not a reinstatement method
What to do with it
Refund on the original charge when you can, and name who funds it.
- Check whether the payout for that charge has left.
- If it has, expect the balance to drop by the refund.
- Do not refund a second time by bank transfer as well.
- Write the shortfall against the agreement if another business took a share.

Questions on this note
Will Stripe take a refund from my bank?
It can debit a linked account when the Stripe balance is not enough, depending on the account and the terms. This page cannot tell you which tool will be used on yours.
Does RevRouters cover the refund?
No. RevRouters does not hold the funds and does not insure the reversal.
