Preorders, courses delivered over a year, retainers, and made-to-order goods share a shape. The card is captured now. The customer can still dispute when the thing is late or different. If the payout already went to the bank, the dispute becomes a debt. A reserve or a delay is the control that keeps some of the money where the dispute can reach it.
If you are paid before you deliver, someone has to hold the risk. Often that someone is a reserve.
What is actually moving
This site will not quote the reserve Stripe will set. Anyone who quotes you a universal percentage is guessing. What you can say truthfully is the delivery time you actually achieve, not the one on the landing page.
- Payment date.
- Delivery date.
- The gap is the risk.
- A reserve is a response to the gap, not a punishment you can negotiate away with adjectives.
What people confuse it with
Describing a six-month build as an instant download, so the account looks lower risk, is how the review becomes a closure. The charges already show the timing.
Not a reinstatement method
What to do with it
State the real gap between payment and delivery.
- Write the usual delivery time and the longest one.
- Do not shorten it in the reply to a notice.
- Keep fulfilment proof for the slow orders. Those are the ones that dispute.
- If you want a partnership assessment, this gap is the first commercial fact, not a footnote.
What this briefing is not
Questions on this note
Can I avoid a reserve by delivering faster on paper?
Only if you actually deliver faster. A policy you do not keep becomes the dispute reason.
Is a reserve a freeze?
No. A reserve holds a slice. A freeze is the word people use when payouts or charges are limited. You can have either, or both.
