Closure feels like an ending. For the money, it is often the start of a hold. Charges stop. The dashboard may still show a balance. That balance is not the same thing as cash you can spend, and it is not a pot another company can be paid from because you have agreed it privately.
Three amounts people mix up
- The gross you thought you had earned. That is a sales figure. Refunds and fees already came off it.
- The Stripe balance on the day of closure. This can include pending amounts and amounts already reserved.
- The amount that later reaches the bank. This is what remains after refunds, lost disputes, fees, and any hold the notice describes.
If you tell a partner, a lender, or a customer the first number, you are describing a hope. The only figure that belongs in a serious conversation is the balance Stripe still shows, labelled as held, and the words of the notice about when or whether it can be paid.
Why the money sits
Card payments can be reversed after the goods have been paid out. That is the entire point of a reserve and of a post-closure hold. Disputes arrive late. Refunds are requested late. A processor that has already sent every penny to the bank is the one holding the loss. Closure is when Stripe stops trusting that the next reversal will be small.
The length of a hold is account-specific. Quoting 90 or 180 days because a forum did is how businesses miss rent. Use the date in your notice if there is one. If there is no date, say there is no date.
What you still owe customers
Closure does not cancel unfulfilled orders. If you cannot deliver, the clean path is a refund from the same charge where refunds are still possible. Leaving the charge in place and offering a voucher the customer cannot use is how a held balance turns into disputes, and disputes are why the hold exists.
Do not re-charge the order somewhere else
How to record it for any later assessment
- The closure notice, verbatim, with the date.
- The balance on that day, and any later payout or debit.
- Open orders you still have to deliver or refund.
- Whether any list, including MATCH, was actually named. Do not infer it.
- The legal entity that owned the account. A new company does not become the owner of this balance by being newer.
What this briefing is not
Questions on this note
Does Stripe pay out the full balance on the day an account is closed?
Do not plan on it. A closure often leaves funds held against refunds, disputes, and the time those can still arrive. The notice may describe a hold. It may not give you a date you can invoice from. There is no universal release day published here.
Can I move the remaining balance to a new Stripe account?
No. The balance belongs to that account relationship. A new account does not inherit it, and opening one to recapture the same sales is a separate and serious problem.
Who pays refunds after the account is closed?
Customers can still have rights to a refund or a dispute outcome. Stripe can take those from the held balance. If the balance is not enough, a negative balance can remain. Who owes that, between you and any partner, has to have been written down. Closure does not invent the answer.
Does a closure mean I am on MATCH?
Not automatically. MATCH, or the terminated merchant file, is a card-network reporting step with its own rules and reasons. A Stripe email that says the account is closed is not, by itself, proof of a MATCH listing. Read the notice, and read the separate briefing on the list before you repeat the word.
