On this page
People search for a blocked Stripe account when the email said restricted, and they search for restricted when charges have already been disabled. The words feel interchangeable. Operationally they are not. A partnership conversation, a cash-flow plan and a reply to Stripe all depend on which capabilities still work.
Stripe’s wording shifts by country, by product (a standard account, a Connect account, a platform) and by year. Use the labels below as a map, then match them to the sentence in your notice. If the notice and this page disagree, the notice wins.
Under review
Under review means a person or a model is looking at the account. It is not, by itself, a verdict. The trigger might be a new account crossing a volume threshold, a change of bank details, a spike in disputes, a website that does not match the application, or a routine check of owners and identity.
During a review Stripe may do nothing visible, or it may pause payouts so that refunds and disputes can still be funded. New charges often continue. The dangerous version of this state is the quiet one: sales keep coming in, fulfilment obligations keep growing, and the bank transfer the business was counting on does not leave. If you sell in that window, you are taking orders against a balance you may not receive on the old timetable.
Restricted
Restricted is Stripe saying the account cannot carry on exactly as before until something is resolved. Sometimes the something is a document. Sometimes it is a change in what you sell. Sometimes it is a reserve. The homepage of the dashboard usually carries a banner, and the email lists the items.
- Information restrictions ask for identity, ownership, a bank confirmation, a description of the product, or evidence of delivery. The clock in the email is part of the restriction.
- Capability restrictions turn pieces off: payouts, a particular payment method, or charges. The rest of the account can look normal, which is why screenshots of the balance alone are useless.
- A restriction is not an invitation to process the same activity through a different Stripe account that has not been told. The restriction is attached to the business Stripe is looking at, not only to the login.
Blocked, disabled, rejected
When charges are disabled, the account is not a temporary inconvenience for the checkout. New card payments on that account fail. Invoices and subscriptions that bill through it fail. You can still have a balance, open disputes and a reserve. Disabled charges plus a held balance is a worse cash position than a payout pause with charges still on, because revenue has stopped and historic obligations have not.
Rejected sometimes appears earlier, at application, when Stripe will not enable the account in the first place. That is not a freeze of a trading book. It is a refusal to onboard. The remedy is not a second application that tells a shorter story. The useful work is understanding which part of the business, the owners or the documents was the problem — and whether that part is still true.
Closed
Closure is the end of the relationship, not a harsher synonym for review. Stripe may close an account it can no longer support, including for risk, for a prohibited or restricted business it will not continue, or because information never arrived. Funds are then handled under that account’s terms: reserves, dispute windows, refunds and any negative balance come first. A promise on a forum about “the money arriving in 90 days” is not a term of your account.
Some closures are reported by acquirers toward card-network terminated-merchant files. A freeze is not automatically such a report, and a closure is not automatically one either. Whether a listing was made is a fact to ask about, not a fact to invent. The briefing on the MATCH list explains what that file is and what it is not.
Do not shop for a softer label
A comparison you can actually use
- Review, charges on, payouts on: you are being looked at. Keep records. Do not assume it stays this quiet.
- Review or restricted, charges on, payouts paused: you are still selling into a balance that is not reaching the bank.
- Charges disabled: new card revenue on this account has stopped. Plan fulfilment of what you already sold before you plan growth.
- Closed: the relationship is over unless Stripe says a review or appeal is open. Another login is not the same relationship.
- One payment blocked by Radar or the issuer: the account may be fine. Open the payment, not a new company.
RevRouters’ merchant assessment asks which of these you are in. The answer changes whether a conversation is even appropriate. It does not change Stripe’s status. No introduction on this site turns disabled charges back on.
What this briefing is not
Questions on this note
Is restricted the same as blocked?
No. Restricted usually means Stripe has limited the account and is asking for something, or has applied a control such as paused payouts. Blocked, disabled or rejected language usually means new charges are not being accepted. Read the capabilities rather than the adjective a friend used.
Can an account be under review and still take payments?
Yes. Review is a process, not a single capability. Charges can remain on while payouts are held, or both can be limited. The dashboard state is the fact. A blog cannot see your account.
If the status changes overnight, which email counts?
The latest notice that names the capabilities, plus what the dashboard shows now. Keep the earlier emails. They explain how you got here. They do not outrank the current state.
